The History of the Holiday
 
nThe Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates  Dimitrov Day  on 26th  of October .It honors the memory of Saint Dimitar. The  Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbs and Russians rival for the patronage of the saint. It is believed that he was a proconsul of Thessaloniki and died a martyr for the faith of Christ on October, 26  306 A.C.
 
Legends and Myths

 According to the folklore St. Dimitar is St. George’s older brother. It is believed that on this day the winter season starts. The old saying is that St. George brings the summer and St. Dimitar brings the winter. His name is associated with the world of the dead. At this time people celebrate All Souls Day. In the minds of our ancestors St. Dimitar rides a white horse  and snowflakes fall fro
his white beard.

                      Feasts
 
The feast for Dimitrov Day  is rich with lots of meat. The mandatory meals that have to attend on the holiday table are: boiled mutton , rooster stew, casserole of lamb , peppers and apple pie. On the table you have to have wine and water
 
          
          
                






            Traditions
 
On Dimitrov Day  you store your clothes from the summer ,you line up the wood for the winter  and you wait for the first snow . Typical  are the three days after Dimitrov Day  called Maurine holidays observed mainly by women.
 
On this day is celebrated
 
nOctober 26 is accepted  also as the day of Sliven , Vidin and Aitos (Bulgarian cities).
nArchitects , builders, designers, construction engineers and all engaged in the field construction also celebrate Dimitrov Day.
nOn this day Dimitar, Dimitrina , Dimo and others have a name day.

                                                            BIOGRAFI

He was born in Samokov around 1790.
Konstantin Georgiev Fotinov is a Renaissance scholar, educator and a translator.
He died on the 29th of November 1858 in Constantinople, Ottoman Empi

                                     INFANCY
 
He studied at the local monastery school.
After that he continued his education in Plovdiv and Kidonia and in the Middle East with the great Greek humanist Theophilos Kairis.
 
                                                         ACTIVITIES
    
                                
                


In 1828 he became a teacher and was actively engaged with literary activity.
In the same year he created
in Smirna (now Izmir)a private joint
Greek-Bulgarian school in which for the first time in Bulgarian lands was introduced the Bell-Lancaster method.
The school program included Bulgarian, Greek and French languages.
He was the editor and publisher of the first Bulgarian magazine “Liuboslovie” that was published in Smirna from 1844 to 1846.

He issued textbooks and books translated into Bulgarian language like:
"Bulgarian phrasebook” (1845)
"Greek Grammar" (1838)
“Total land description” (1843) and others

                 Tradition
 
The tradition is that on this holiday people wear scary costumes , they make pumpkin lanterns and go next door to the neighbors who give away candy and sweets to young children , so that they won’t become a “victim” of their jokes.

According to an old folk legend ,the Halloween pumpkin is connected with the story of a peasant blacksmith named Jack or Jack Stisnatia and that’s why the pumpkin lantern is called jack-o-lantern

  The meaning of this commitment is to highlight what is and what should be the Christian family, and the requirements and conditions for a healthy family, for a real Christian family life.



The tradition says that when Mary reached the age of three years, her parents - Joachim and Anna - fulfilled their promise given before she was born - they enter their daughter in the Temple and then devoted her to God.


 
 
 
 
 
On November 21st people are willing to be surrounded by many friends. They are loving and thoughtful and support their close ones . They should be happy in romantic relationships. They like to feel connected and usually opt for marriage.



 
 














Saint Nicholas'Day

St. Nicholas is an Orthodox’ holiday of St. Nicholas Mirlikiyski – the patron saint of sailors, travelers and bankers.


        Saint Nicholas
  St. Nicholas is born in Patra, Greece. His relics are kept in Bari, Italy. His name means “Victory". The holiday is celebrated on the 6th of December
    Name day holder
 In Bulgaria, on St. Nicholas Day, celebrate those with the names- Nikolai, Nikola, Neicho, Nikolina, Nikoletta, Kolio and others. In the home of the person who celebrates her or his name day there come relatives, friends even people who aren’t invited and they are welcomed at the feast table.

       

 The Feast




 
This day is a nation-wide holiday. Family’s that don’t have a name holder also celebrate this day . On the festive table should be served fish dishes, most often - carp stuffed with walnuts
